Hedge fund launches have fallen by ~50% in 5 years, according to the newest data

Per Goldman Sachs, funds starting with >$1 billion have an 84% five-year survival rate. Those starting at $25 million are below 50%.

What has changed: Platform capital is now the default launch path for new managers.

Talent is consolidating at bigger funds. Recent moves include Kelly Granat going to Atreides and Geoffrey Lauprete now at Point72,

Jain Global now manages only Millennium money, who just raised another $22 billion that needs managing.

Bloomberg counted 12 launches above $1 billion in 2005 and one so far this year. The great consolidation continues.
